What is the passing score for AZ-900?
The AZ-900 exam requires a score of 700 out of 1000 points (70%) to pass. This is Microsoft's standard passing bar for most role-based and fundamentals certifications.
How does AZ-900 scoring work?
- You do not need a specific number of correct questions — scoring is weighted per question.
- Questions have different point values; case studies and complex questions can be worth more.
- Some questions are unscored pilot questions used for exam research — they don't count toward your score, but you can't tell which ones they are.
- Your score is calculated by a scaled scoring model, not a simple percentage of correct answers.
How many questions can you get wrong?
With roughly 40–60 questions (some unscored pilot questions), you typically need to answer about 70% correctly on the scored questions. On a typical 50-question form you can miss roughly 12–15 questions, depending on weights. The safest target: score 85%+ on practice tests so you have a comfortable margin.
What happens if you fail?
- You'll see your score immediately (not a question-by-question breakdown).
- You can retake after a 24-hour waiting period.
- Maximum 5 retakes per year per exam.
- Each retake costs the full exam price (unless you have a voucher).
What score should you aim for in practice?

Tips to maximize your score
- Answer every question — there's no penalty for wrong answers, so never leave one blank.
- Flag questions you're unsure about and come back at the end.
- Watch for negative phrasing: "NOT", "EXCEPT", "ALWAYS" change the entire meaning.
- For "choose all that apply" questions, only select answers you're sure about — partial credit rules vary.
- Don't rush: 45 minutes for 40–60 questions gives roughly a minute per question — flag and skip the long ones, then come back.
